The Punkt (dots) Carnival series revives memories of childhood with its celebration of life through a resplendence of colorful dots. These dots are simultaneously lights, a mass of people, a flock of birds—the colors of life’s many carnival events. For this series, I’ve pulled inspiration from the vibrancy of my surroundings as well as my Japanese heritage. With dense layering I am able to create an energetic vibrancy that alternates with the quieter more sparse spaces, to convey a sense of depth and movement.
The color in the “Peace of Mind” series establishes silence and harmony. My purposefully limited color palette extends peripheral spaces for thinking, building meditative and peaceful pieces within the divided surface. The creation and contemplation of these paintings are places for holding the mind still.
